Recently I paged through Sally Mann's Immediate Family book. I've been a fan of this series since I first saw it my freshman year, but it was really nice to revisit it. These were a few of my favorite images. (Especially the one above- something about the starkness and ambiguity of that image absolutely mesmerizes me. And the soft spot in me loves that Jessie is spelled with an -ie like mine.)

James Singewald is a Baltimore photographer that concentrates on our city's historical locations that are now left abandoned and neglected. Below is a sample of his work- mostly my personal favorites. With their futures up in the air, James is working to photograph each historical building on Baltimore's oldest streets to complete a series of books. His first book was his graduate thesis at MICA, titled Old Town, East Baltimore.

You can find Old Town, East Baltimore on Blurb, which is an awesome self-publishing website. I love this photo book- the way the photos of every building overlap each other is really interesting and keeps you looking at all the details on the street. Make sure to check out his website to see what I'm talking about.

As I mentioned, James is trying to do a book like Old Town for every historic street in Baltimore, including Howard, Eutaw, Baltimore, Broadway, North, and Greenmount to name a few. He's using another awesome website, Kickstarter, to get these projects funded. Below you can see his Kickstarter video, but make sure to go check out the page and support! Every little bit counts, and you get your choice of awesome prints from the artist as your reward for supporting a great project! I did!

About a year ago, I started watching Weeds for the first time. I started with the first season and worked my way through all 5 seasons. I loved the first few, but as time went on I started using the phrase "train wreck I can't stop watching" to describe the show. After the 5th season's finale, I said I was done. It had gone too far and I didn't know if I could do any more. Wellllll I just saw the 6th season's trailer and by the looks of things they're going back to the way things used to be and I'm completely ok with that. Artscape 2010 starts tomorrow at 12noon and I, for one, am going to be there at noon. Mostly because I live on Mt. Royal so I'm right here but also because the earlier I am the more likely I will get most of the free samples. For a full schedule of everything this awesome festival has to offer, check out their website.

For the rest of the weekend, half of it will be spent in Frederick and the other half on my balcony, looking down on all the craziness that happens at Artscape. I'm pretty stoked :) Below is my new favorite Mt. Royal sculpture. Every year, with Artscape, comes a new set of Mt. Royal sculptures. A few have been really awesome over the years but a few have been really awful, too. Most of them this year don't really have my interest, but this one is wonderful. It makes me happy :)

Satan in Movies

So I just watched Devil's Advocate for the first time in years and A) I enjoyed it much more than I remember doing the first time and B) it got me thinking about the great actors that have played Satan throughout the years. If you can think of others, please let me know. These are my top picks.

Al Pacino in Devil's Advocate. Pacino's brilliant (like usual) in this movie. He's bad but he makes you feel soo good about it. The movie is bad but in a cheesey but terribly entertaining way. I don't know if I want to like it, but I do.

Jack Nicholson in The Witches of Eastwick. He's Satan after a few months of training at the Playboy Mansion. This is another guilty-pleasure type movie: Nicholson co-stars with Cher, Susan Surandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer.

And last but certainly not least, we have Peter Stormare in Constantine. That movie is super shitty but the five minutes at the end with him acting as Satan almost makes it worth it.

MICA 2010 Print Exchange

I participated in MICA Photo Department's Print Exchange again this year. Sadly, my collection of 30 prints from last year's exchange was lost during my move, so I made sure to get this one before I graduated. I got a ton of sweet prints this year that I'm super excited about! Everyone did a great job with their submissions. This was the photo I submitted, cropped slightly. I took it on a cloudy morning with my dad during a trip to Brady's Lake in the Poconos a few years back.

Project Runway Winners

So, season 7 of Project Runway just ended and Seth Aaron won! Yay! I starting thinking about the past winners, so I looked everyone up and here's a little reminder of who they were and what their collections looked like.

Season 1
Jay McCarroll! I love Jay and his work. He's from the same area of Pennsylvania that I am, so he automatically holds a special place in my heart. His Project Runway collection was filled with knits, patchwork, color, and volume. Each piece also had matching headphones, which was genius. He now has a label and an online boutique- The Colony. I heart him.

Season 2
Season 2's winner was Chloe Dao. Her collection was beautiful, but I remember that she wasn't my favorite from the season. That was the season with designer Santino Rice and I was on the "Hate to Love Him" Team. (Side note: I love that Santino is still on TV. Woohoo Ru Paul's Drag Race!) Chloe's shapes were gorgeous and I loved how feminine the collection was. She now has several lines and numerous stores- Dao Chloe Dao.

Season 3
Jeffrey Sebelia! He was my fav season 3. He was the first tattooed, punk designer on Project Runway. His designs were bold but also soft and girlie. They were also rich in details (he used zippers everywhere). He has a label- Cosa Nostra.

Season 4
Season 4's winner was Christian Siriano, and his personality is pretty much perfectly summed up in this photo of him with Project Runway host, Heidi Klum. He was ridiculous, fun, and left his biggest mark by coining the term, "That's fierce." His collection was beautiful, though not one of my favorites from the winners. He now has several collections and lines- Christian V Siriano.

Season 5
Leanne Marshall can be summed up in one word: adorable. Her Project Runway collection was adorable (and extremely well crafted), her work since is adorable, and she herself is adorable. Even her website name, Leanimal, is adorable. How could you not love her?

(It's really odd to see her like this- without the glasses and her hair all over the place)

Season 6
Season 6's winner was Irina Shabayeva. Irina was a bitch for the majority of the season, and I wasn't thrilled that she won, however I will say that her collection was awesome. The hats and the mood that they set for the outfits were spectacular. You can see the rest of her collections at Irina Shabayeva.com.

Season 7
And finally, Seth Aaron Henderson won the latest season of Project Runway. His work plays with punk designs and ideas, but it is still refined and fresh. With it being less than 2 weeks since his win has been public he doesn't have any sort of website besides what Lifetime TV channel's website has on him. (BTW, I hate how Lifetime has turned Project Runway into a gimmick. I don't need a portfolio of photos of Seth's family right next to a portfolio of his work- please keep them separate, Lifetime. Not everything in life needs to be a soap opera.)

I'm sorry to say that one of the most interesting people I have ever had the privilege of meeting passed away on March 27, 2010. Bob Zimmers was the owner of the camera shop in Zern's Farmers Market, and was one of the nicest people I think I've met. He was always there to offer up stories or his past photography adventures, advice for anyone who asked, and a friendly smile to passers by. My condolences to his family, and may her rest in peace.

Former Polaroid employees bring instant film back to life

A group of former Polaroid employees in Holland has brought the instant film back to life - nearly two years after the camera maker ceased production.

Owners of Polaroid's SX-70 and 600 format cameras will be able to buy packs of new black and white film this week, with colour format film available later in the year through retailers including John Lewis in the UK and FNAC in France and Spain.

The iconic white-framed prints, which take three minutes to develop, have been produced by the Impossible Project - so named because their venture was declared impossible by Polaroid - in partnership with Ilford Photo of the UK.

Impossible acquired the last Polaroid production plant in Enschede, Netherlands, in October 2008 after the US corporation closed the factory in June 2008.

The small band of engineers, most of whom are in their 50s, have been working since then to create a new version of the "instant integral" film.

Many of the components and chemicals required for each picture were no longer available, so the new film is made up of 29 new layers and 13 new chemicals.

Producing the new film has taken slightly longer than Impossible expected, with investment totalling €2.3m ($3.1m).

Impossible plans to produce 1m packs of the film this year - each of which contains eight photos - ramping up to 3m in 2011.

With an estimated 300m functioning Polaroid cameras still in existence - gathering dust in attics or selling on Ebay - Impossible believes it could sell up to 10m films a year.

The two initial releases of film - PX 100 and PX 600 Silver Shade - will be available at the Impossible Project's website from Thursday for $21 a pack, with other retailers to follow shortly.

Limited-edition "First Flush" packs - named after the year's first crop of tea, which is typically picked in March - were unveiled at a launch event in New York yesterday.

"It will taste different every time you brew it," said Florian Kaps, an Austrian co-founder of Impossible. "It's not like a can of soda that tastes the same every time you drink it."

The popularity of digital photography has reduced film to a niche product.

Last summer, Kodak ceased production of its famous Kodachrome film after more than 70 years.

Polaroid Corporation, which was founded by Edwin Land in the 1930s, filed for bankruptcy in 2008 .

2010 March for the Animals!!

A few months ago I began volunteering at the Maryland SPCA. The MD SPCA is a phenomenal place. In their own words, "The Maryland SPCA is a private, nonprofit, independent organization dedicated to helping animals and people. Our mission is to improve the lives of pets and people in the community by fostering healthy animal-human relationships." The MD SPCA adopts out over 3,000 pets every year. The average time a dog spends in the program from entrance to adoption is 3-5 days. They never euthanize animals for space or because of a length of time the animal has been in the facility. The good that they do for the animals in the Baltimore area cannot be measured. Every year they host an event called March for the Animals. This event is the MD SPCA's largest annual fundraiser, raising over $360,000 for the animals. ALL money donated goes directly to the MD SPCA. It's a 1.5 mile walkathon in local Druid Hill Park. The day also includes pet contests, training classes, pet demonstrations and entertainment.

As a volunteer for the MD SPCA, I have joined the Dog Deputy Pack for the March for the Animals. This means that at the event, I will walk with the other members from my pack and the money we raise separately will be donated together from the group. I'm inviting you to help me support this great cause by making a donation to the March for the Animals. This cause is very important to me. My boyfriend, Greg, has been working at the MD SPCA for some time and he adopted his dog, Kaylee, from there about two years ago. Greenberg

Jill Greenberg should be a household name. In one form or another, her photography has appeared in your home. She's had an uncanny amount of her work published because she has a style that magazines, advertisements, and the entertainment and music industry alike, all ask for. And, somehow, on top of meeting and working with celebrity after celebrity and dealing with multiple companies, she still has time to produce her own work. Most recently has been her New Bears show. I saw this show at the Clamp Art Gallery a few months ago while I was visiting New York City. The show was small and the space was a little cramped, however that did not take away from the magnificence of these images. They're huge in person and this only lent itself to prove that these were real bears that she worked with. Yes, real bears. Greenberg had a great deal of success with a previous series- Monkeys and Apes- and therefore she wanted to continue to use live animals. In both of these cases, the artist was able to capture personality and expressions in the animals that isn't seen otherwise. A few examples from both series are below.

Another series done by Greenberg- this one a little more controversial- is End Times. End Times is a series of portraits of hysterical children. These are gorgeous. Greenberg puts it best- "Pictures of children crying capture raw emotion: sputtering rage and profound loss." We as adults cannot understand the raw emotion that these children are experiencing because we've suppressed it for so long. These images are violent and extremely uncomfortable to view because in our subconscious we understand them, and I find that beautiful.

...fer rulls. It's going to take forever to put together and I'm going to want to kill myself, but it'll be totally worth it. I honestly just need to go through my negatives in general- I know I have images that I've never looked at and that's bad. That's the way it goes for photographers, though, right? You shoot 200 to end up with 3. Gotta love it.

The images below are the three that I submitted for MICA's Senior Photo Book. Pretty standard. I was stressing a little over which photos to include, but in the end I realized that no matter what images I chose I was still going to be questioning my decision, so I just went with my first choices. I feel they sum up my work pretty well. One thing I'm learning this semester is that I'm really bad at talking about my own art and even worse at writing about it. I've gotta work on that.

The two below are from her Series II collection (all above are from Series I). I'm not sure I like these as much- I feel they're a little more messy than the first series and the dead space doesn't really do much for me. However, I was extremely surprised at how great the movie was and how much I enjoyed it. It was gorgeous! I watched the season 2 finale of Sons of Anarchy last night. Um.... amazing. I'm not going to be surprised if I start a countdown until the start of the next season, and I never make countdowns for anything. The second half of this song was featured in the end of the second to last episode when the Sons were riding out to fight Weston and his gang. I loved it so much, I searched chat rooms for it. Somebody might need to schedule an intervention....

Speaking of unsettling things- I watched Perfume: The Story of a Murderer tonight. It was gorgeous and fantastic and gory and horrifying all at the same time. I was both shocked by the overall beauty of the film, yet disturbed by the imagery. Personally, I'd call it a fairy tale. An extreme, yet beautiful, Boogie Man story. Did I mention this movie was gorgeous? Yeah, just see it.

Vik Muniz is a photographer. His work is made from diamonds, dust, caviar, thread, wire, dirt, chocolate, and garbage, but he is a photographer. He shapes portraits from the materials listed above only to photograph them, then they're destroyed. Everything was done for the photograph and it only exists as a photograph. I like that. And his work is fucking sweet.

Last week my Large Format Photography class went to Geppi's Entertainment Museum at Camden Yards. The place was amazing!! Geppi's is definitely one of Baltimore's best spots that little to nobody knows about. I fell in love immediately and snapped a few hundred digital images and these were my favorites. Today for Large Format class we took a trip to the Geppi's Entertainment Museum at Camden Yards. It was AMAZING!! I took over 200 pics, so once I edit them down, I'll post a few. We talked about JeongMee Yoon's ongoing Pink & Blue Project the other day in class and I fell in love with these images. They're awesome by themselves, but all of the prints combined make an even larger statement (there are about 60 on the website). The artist said this in her statement:

This project explores the trends in cultural preferences and the differences in the tastes of children (and their parents) from diverse cultures, ethnic groups as well as gender socialization and identity. The work also raises other issues, such as the relationship between gender and consumerism, urbanization, the globalization of consumerism and the new capitalism.

Scott Campbell likes to cut money, and I'm okay with that. These sculptures are (get ready for the pun) money. They are stacks of 100 $1 bills that the artist has laser cut designs into. Scott is a tattoo artist based in New York City and uses tattoo iconography in his artwork. This show, called "Always Almost There," is on display right now at the Lazarides Gallery in London. His site has a ton of his tattoo work on it as well as his fine art work, which is also definitely worth seeing.
